Wishing on Stars

Featured in the Anthology "Raft of Leaves: On Aging, Death and Foreignness" Stockholm Writers Group, 2021

In honor of our beloved writing colleague Marti Parker, I contributed a short story to this anthology compiled by members of the Stockholm Writer's Group. Here is a small section from my story, "Wishing on Stars," an excerpt from my middle grade novel.

My mother’s grave lay in the shade of a big leafy maple tree. She was a mother who liked to climb trees. She would crawl up the big oak in our backyard when I was little. I would call out to her, afraid she would fall. She held out her hand to me, coaxing me to join her, but I hung back. I wish now I had been brave enough to try.

The Handyman

Featured in "What a Character!: Florida Writers Association, Volume Nine", 2017

Macy leveled her gaze at Delia. "You don't know us; in fact, you don't know nothin'." She turned to Miles. "Thanks, Daddy. I'll call you when we get to Oklahoma." When they got back into Miles's truck, the silence was more searing than anything Delia had endured in her marriage. Miles seemed to be making internal adjustments, pushing aside the reality she'd just witnessed and returning to the one he wished to live. Eventually, he said, "Did I ever tell you about the time I took Macy alligator hunting? She was only four but she was all excited about going with her daddy to beat the bushes for one of those critters" "No, you've never told me that one," Delia said, settling into her seat. "Tell me that story, Miles. We have all the time in the world."

Taking Flight

Top Ten Pick in the Anthology "Hide & Seek: Florida Writers Association, Volume Eight" 2016

The tiny shop street was crammed with masks of every color and type. Princes and princesses, dragons, lions and horses, all adorned with feathers, sequins and lace. The proprietor looked up from his book as they entered. They were alone in the shop. “Let’s try them on,” she told Edward. She walked to the far corner of the shop and pulled down a glittery mask with tall purple feathers fringed in gold. As Liliana peered in the mirror, she liked the transformation, the reminder that she could be anyone at all beneath the mask.
